Israel’s First Lunar Landing Failed Just Seconds Before Touchdown

In what would have been the world’s first privately funded and operated successful lunar landing – and Israel’s first ever – the Beresheet lander malfunctioned just seconds before touchdown after one of the lander’s main engines failed. The problem was reported at 3:24 pm EST. Shortly after, engineers reset the craft but ultimately lost communication with the 150-kilogram (330-pound) lander before it crashed, NASA Spaceflight reported.  “We didn’t make it, but we definitely tried, and I think the achievement of getting to where we got is pretty tremendous,” Morris Kahn, SpaceIL’s president and primary funder, said in the 51-minute live-stream of the attempt. “I think we can be proud… you win some, you lose some.” Israel set out to become the fourth …

To help her gay son, this amazing mom carried and gave birth to her own granddaughter.

Like many gay couples, Matthew Eledge and his husband Elliot Dougherty desperately wanted to have their own children. But being in a same-sex relationship called for them to be a little more creative in how they achieved that dream. At 59 years old, Matthew’s mother, Cecile Eledge, was supportive and excited to be a grandma. So excited — that she offered to serve as the surrogate and carry her own grandchild. While it began as sort of a family joke, eventually the idea grew into something inexplicably wonderful. Eledge and Dougherty’s daughter Uma Louise. “It just seemed like a really beautiful sentiment on her part,” Elliott told the BBC. “She’s such a selfless woman.” However, the fertility specialist, Dr. Carolyn …

Filing Your Taxes? Watch Out for Phishing Scams

The Internal Revenue Service has warned taxpayers for years to be wary of online phishing, where criminals impersonate the agency using fake emails, text messages, or websites in order to steal your personal information. Last month, phishing topped the agency’s “dirty dozen” list of most prevalent scams. But online scammers do more than masquerade as the IRS. Some have created fake versions of online accounting tools like QuickBooks, while others pretend to be tech support agents. The cybersecurity firm Lookout discovered more than 100 websites registered in recent months that appear designed to dupe people trying to file their taxes. The domains target a large pool of potential victims: More than 135 million Americans filed their taxes electronically last year, …

Lil Nas X’s ‘Old Town Road’ Already Encapsulates 2019

Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" stuns. Literally. It wrenches the listener into a daze. Perhaps you'll wonder where you are, confused by its temperament: both familiar and strange to the ear. But "Old Town Road" is a nexus that pulls in everything with which it comes in contact, and by the fifth listen, with a faint surge of jubilance coursing through you, it feels like a feast. You want more. In the last month alone, the song, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 last week after a bout of controversy, has forced the internet into a giddy, and sustained, state of gridlock. "Can't nobody tell me nothing," our cowboy announces. And because we, too, desire that …

One Of Four Remaining Nearly Extinct Turtles Dies After Artificial Insemination Attempt

The world’s last known female Yangtze giant softshell turtle died just 24 hours after a failed fifth attempt at artificial insemination in a bid to save her species, reports China Daily. Believed to be more than 90 years old, Xiangxiang is one of the last four known turtles of her species in the world. She leaves behind a male Yangtze turtle over a century old in China and two other unsexed turtles living in the wild outside of Hanoi, Vietnam.   Her death leaves the species functionally extinct – the population no longer viable – unless another female is found in the wild. The male and female turtles were brought together at China’s Suzhou Zoo in 2008, where veterinarians and conservationists …
